Naturalist Dennis Puleston Remembered At Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society Benefit

EDF Counsel Jim Tripp Also Honored on August 9

This year the Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society’s Annual Summer Benefit – scheduled for Saturday, August 9 – will recognize
the contributions of two men who have strengthened our understanding of the natural world and the importance of its preservation. World-renowned naturalist Dennis
Puleston will be remembered through his art, artifacts and attributes during a special presentation and Jim Tripp, General Counsel for the Environmental Defense Fund
(EDF), will be the evening’s honoree.

Dennis Puleston, a true Renaissance man, lived to the age of 95 and died at his home in Brookhaven hamlet in 2001. He is known for his six-year round-the-world sail
and for his many enterprises: sailor, explorer, ornithologist, director of technical information at Brookhaven National Laboratory, cruise-ship naturalist, husband, father,
author of “A Nature Journal”, painter of birds and wildlife, botanist, and first chairman of the EDF.

Celebrating his 35th anniversary with EDF (www.edf.org) based in New York City, Jim Tripp and family have spent summers in Bellport since the 1980’s. EDF is a
membership organization seeking new and practical environmental solutions to protect the natural world, while growing the economy.

The evening’s festivities will be held at 31 Bellport Lane from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with music, refreshments, a BBQ and a live auction. The family of Dennis Puleston will
share memories and an exhibition of his books and paintings – entitled “A Life Exploring Nature” – will be on view. Tickets are $125 per person and may be purchased
online at www.bbhsmuseum.org or by calling 631-776-7640. Program details and information on sponsorships, commemorative posters and auction items – including
a private tour of the Frick Museum, a moonlight sail, and original artwork – are also available online.

All proceeds benefit the non-profit Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society in its mission to collect, preserve and share Long Island’s history with an emphasis on the
south shore communities of Brookhaven, Bellport and East Patchogue. “A Life Exploring Nature” will be on view Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4:00 p.m.
through Labor Day at the Historical Society complex at 12 Bell Street in Bellport.
Call 631-776-7640 to arrange group tours.
